February 2026 | Delavan Aram Public Library Newsletter

Let's Get Cozy, it's Hygge month!
February is Hygge month at the library!

Pronounced (hoo-gah), it is a Danish concept roughly translating to "cosiness" and celebrating the little things in life - sitting around visiting friends and family but also enjoying simple pleasures like coffee or tea and a good book.
The season of Hygge is at a high point during the holidays and winter - months when you want to cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie or, meet with friends.  The library has just the recipe for embracing Hygge with our February programs which include:  Sewing Soup Koozies, Sweet or Spicy Book Tasting, a Simmer Pot bar, Dino Nugget Pillows and gaming!

Want to know a bit more about Hygge?  Author Meik Wiking has written about it in his book, The Little Book of Hygge.
Quilt included in the basket drawing, donated by Scrappers Guild in Williams Bay.
February will also have a quilt drawing and a hygge basket drawing for all ages!
Our comfort quilt was donated by the Scrappers Guild in Williams Bay.

Switchboard Soldiers
by Jennifer Chiaverini
Among the first women sworn into the U.S. Army under the Articles of War. The switchboard soldiers could connect each call in ten seconds. The risk of death was real as was the threat of a deadly new disease. The women of the U.S. Army Signal Corps served with honor and played an essential role in achieving the Allied victory.

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States
by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US regimen has largely been omitted from history. Now, for the first time,   Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples.

The Graves Are Walking
by John Kelly
Measured in terms of mortality, the Great Irish Potato Famine was one of the worst disasters in the nineteenth century. A perfect storm of bacterial infection, political greed, and religious intolerance.
This is ultimately a story of triumph over perceived destiny: for fifty million Americans of Irish heritage, the saga of a broken people fleeing crushing starvation and remaking themselves in a new land.

Delavan Public Library New Strategic Plan!

The library is pleased to announce the adoption of our new 2026-2029 Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Trustees on November 13, 2025.

This plan will guide the Library’s priorities and investments over the next four years. Developed with extensive input from residents, community partners, staff, and City administration, the plan shares a template for the Library's continued evolution.  With the upcoming completion of our expansion project, it is the perfect time to continue our strong library foundation but also explore new directions, continuing growth and support for the community we serve.

Capital Campaign, Phase III

We are thrilled with the progress of our library's renovation/expansion project!  Did you know there is a weekly blog with weekly construction updates?  While you're following along with our progress, the Delavan Aram Public Library Foundation (DAPLF) continues to work diligently towards a Phase III goal of $500,000 in grants, pledges, and/or donations.  If you have a lead on a grant or possible donor, we'd love to hear it.

As all projects go, funding is still needed especially for unique items like in the Discover Zone with hands-on toys and games.  Or, maybe you know someone interested in sponsoring our Whisper Room, a small recording studio? Or, perhaps you know someone who might be interested in donating funding towards furniture?

Our space is special and our community makes it even more so. Donations of any size can be made at the link here or on the image below.  If you have a lead or a question, please reach out to our Director, Michelle Carter, at director@aramlibrary.org
